A reflective talk about thin space, where the host describes the Franciscan practice of noticing the space between states—day and night, seasons, obligations—and invites listeners to sit in that in-between moment and be present.
The host opens with warm Sunday greetings, explains he’s back in his car at a familiar parking lot and mentions subbing in at the piano bench. This sets the scene and tone for the short reflective talk.
He reflects on how the landscape changes through the seasons—lush summer, stark winter, favorite spring and fall transitions—and shares a small moment when a crow lands and he exchanges greetings with neighbors.
The host explains the concept of 'thin space,' a Franciscan practice of finding the quiet in-between moments between what has been and what will be, used for grounding, prayer, and focus.
Using his 40-minute drive and parked moment as an example, he notices being neither at work nor home and feels liberated into the present. He invites viewers to find that in-between 'thin space,' be where they are, and recognizes it as the place of presence and power.
Hey, good morning Cadre. Happy Sunday. I hope you're doing great out there in the Cadre sphere. I am, if you tuned in yesterday, as promised, back in my car and back to a familiar parking lot. m. Sunday Cadre today. And I'm subbing in today at the piano bench. So I'm back at this familiar parking lot. For probably about two years, this is where Sunday's cadre today was. I'm glad that I'm here. I'm glad that you're here. I know the things I know and I care about you. And as always, I'm covered in at least three dogs' fur.
But that's okay. I do not mind. I remember back in the day I would talk about what I would see outside my windshield when I would stop here every week to do the cadres today. In the summer, there'd be lush green. In the winter, it'd be white and stark. But my favorites would be in the spring and in the fall when every single week you'd start to really see the change. There's a crisp in the air. The sun is starting to come up later and later. So where the shadows hit the field across the street here is clearly changed.
There's a crow that just landed literally on the roof of the car next to me one second ago because he must have known that it was cadre time. Hey, Scott. Hey, Carrie. Happy, happy Sunday. But Sundays in cadre today world was always thin space. Thin space is this concept and this practice used by Franciscans, Franciscan monks. to kind of to ground, to pray, to meditate, to do the things that they did and that they do still. And then space is that space in between everything that has been and everything that will be between the day and the night, between beginnings and ends, between seasons.
They would find themselves in that space in between and that space. That's where they would find quiet and calm and focus and and all the things they were looking for. And so often that We as a species are very good at not acknowledging that space is relatively easy to find because we're always in that space in between everything that has been and everything that will be. So driving up here this morning, it's about a 40 minute drive, it was amazing how listening to the radio and watching the cars go by and now sitting in this parking lot going, what do I become aware of?
I become aware of that I'm not at work yet, but I'm not at home. I'm aware that it is Sunday, it is not Saturday, but it's not yet Monday. All of a sudden I'm liberated into this moment of now. In this moment where I have to be where I am because I'm sitting in my car talking to you. What a great gift. My invitation for you today is to find that space in between. In between everything that has been and everything that will be. And be where you are. Because A, it's the best place to be. It's where you have power.
And B, you don't have a choice. You are always exactly where you are. So be there. See you tomorrow.
