Ms. Shannon leads a comedic parenting conversation about finding joy amid chaos, seasonal transitions in caregiving, and navigating tough decisions for kids with special needs while advocating and moving forward.
Miss Shannon Paul opens the episode, lists her roles (comedian, speaker, parent) and explains the Saturday edition of Comedy Through the Chaos. She sets a warm, conversational tone and mentions her teen in the other room.
Shannon talks about recent efforts to recenter joy amid parenting chaos and introduces a tangible seasonal-clothing metaphor about whether to move on or hold on to the previous phase. This sets up the central analogy she'll use to explore parenting decisions.
Using a conversation with another parent, Shannon discusses worries about taking next steps for a child with special needs and the tendency to avoid helpful supports out of fear of stigma. She advises trusting your instincts, advocating for your child, and focusing on what they need now rather than saving solutions for later.
Shannon explains her immediate plan to pull appropriate clothing for her teen, encourages viewers to make space for current needs, and thanks the Cadre community for joining. She offers reassurance, reminds viewers of the next session time, and closes with a friendly goodbye.
Everybody good to see you here in the cadre sphere. Hello to you North good to see you I am Miss Shannon Paul by trade I'm a variety of word related things including a comedian a corporate speaker a voice actor an event MC and a benefit auctioneer by heart I am the proud parent of an adorable 18 year old kiddo who happens to be high support on the autism spectrum and I am very encouraged this morning because you probably can't hear it from where you are, but there are happy noises coming from the other room.
So he's in the shower making happy noises and, you know, and enjoying himself while I told him that he should go and clean his body and soak his head. And that is working out well. So welcome to the Saturday edition of Comedy Through the Chaos, where we focus on a variety of things, including how we can recenter on some of the joy that we have during the chaos of our lives especially as parents which is a lot of what we're doing I am also in the process of going do I go all in on the seasonal transition that we need to do and so for that mean for that in our house that means do I go and get the bin of winter-ish and winter related clothes out.
Do I go that what I'm gonna need into the future is fall or do I allow all of his shorts and stuff to stay in easily accessible positions in the house for both him and for me? And I think that that's a good example, a tangible example of what a lot of us are doing anytime we're parenting is going, is it time to move on to the next phase or do I need overlap? Or am I holding on to the previous season for too long and I'm going to have to now layer up a bunch of inappropriate clothes to make it work?
And I think that's a hard decision when you're parenting. Like, you're always trying to move forward, but there's a lot of times where there's certain things that are anchoring you back to the previous season that you were in. Or maybe sometimes that's just, you know, being unsure of whether you really are able to move forward. I had a really good conversation last night with another parent friend of mine who happens to have a special needs daughter and how concerned she is about what the next steps need to be for her kid and almost to the point that she's holding back from some things that would probably support her kid better because she's so worried that that will stigmatize her kid or make it harder for her in the future when definitely would help her at the moment.
And I think we get in that conundrum very often. And my advice as my kid is older and I've just been in this particular journey longer was to trust yourself that when you get to that next step for sure that you will be able to do the mama bear or papa bear things that you need to do to make sure that you continue to advocate for your kid and to do as much as you can to focus on what we need right now. So back to my initial thing is that I do need to have access to a couple of pairs of sweatpants and some other stuff because we're getting to the point here in Minnesota where we live that is appropriate.
It's 40s. I know I have a Minnesota teenager and he'd like to wear basketball shorts and a hoodie all year, even if it's below 0. But I feel that is not an appropriate thing for him to do, although it is kind of the norm here in the part of the Midwest that we live in. So what I'm gonna focus on is what do I need to put in front of him right now to make his life appropriately supported? And so that means, yes, I'm gonna take the time to go into the closet that has all of our complicated bins of next season's clothes, and I'm gonna make sure I pull out the things that make sense right now.
And I'm also doing that because I know that down the road, if I keep saving some of these things, they may not really fit what I was saving them for anyway. we've all had that time where we're like, hey, I had this thing living in the back of the closet or in the bottom of the drawer, and then you go to try it on, and it's just not the right thing for you anymore. And you need something else anyway. So feel free to make some space for what you need at this moment, and know that you can always. put it away, put it someplace else if you need to right now and use it while the time is appropriate right now and don't keep putting it off for later or saving it for later.
That is what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna go make sure that although he's in the shower enjoying the water as if he's in a tropical waterfall, I'm going to make sure that he also uses some soap and becomes clean. during this process, not just wet. So whatever your version of that looks like today, whatever you're going to take out of your closet so that you can start working for the next season, give yourself time to actually go, you know what? I'm sure that this fits right now. Let's see how that goes.
